You can apply for a grant:
  • If you are a former merchant seafarer or fisherman
  • If you have had 10 years sea service, although applicants with less than 10 years who have a specific need may be considered
  • If you are a widow or widower of a former merchant seafarer or fisherman

Merchant Navy Welfare Board
The Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) supports co-ordination of the work of over 40 member charities and maintains Port Welfare Committees throughout the UK. It does not give grants to individuals but can direct applicants to appropriate sources of help. SNWS is a member of the Central & West Scotland Port Welfare Committee
Nautilus International
Nautilus International is the trade union for maritime professionals. Through the Nautilus Welfare Fund they provide welfare to needy seafarers and their dependants, including residential housing in Wallasey for retired seafarers
Scottish Veterans Residences
SVR provides high quality supported accommodation for veterans who are homeless or in need.
The Seafarers Charity
Seafarers UK gives grants to maritime charities (SNWS included) that look after the welfare needs of seafarers, ex-seafarers and their dependants.
Seafarers Hospital Society
SHS provides health and welfare grants to seafarers and their dependants and to the maritime organisations that care for them.
Seafarers Advice & Information Line
The Seafarers’ Advise and Information Line (SAIL) is a national telephone advice service provided exclusively for merchant seafarers, fishermen and their families.
Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Royal Benevolent Society
The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society aims to relieve distress amongst seafarers and the ex-seafaring community by providing grants to those in need.
